Yes, you read it correctly! I've found that there is one massive advantage to using public transport - the idea of a power nap! LOL! The ability of some people to take a quick nap while travelling to a destination. Did I miss it while driving to and from work this year!
Like this morning... Had an interesting evening last night - collecting some parts of my project ride - which I'm trying to finalize for transfer onto my name and the roadworthy certification that goes with it. Needless to say, but this morning I felt I needed that little extra to get me through the day... and wonder by wonder the power nap came into play.
Now don't get me wrong... Catching up on your ZzZ's is not for everybody... Some people can get very embarrassed - and I don't mean your fellow travelers... But if you are hard-headed like me, and you know you deserve a break...and most importantly - you have someone else who will wake you when your destination is reached! - you are a candidate for the power nap! LOL!
So - you've been warned - do use it very conservatively!
Have a wonderful day... And try to source a bargain on Crazy Wednesdays at bidorbuy.co.za
Peace!

I'm lovin it!
LOL! A certain catch phrase some of you might know... 8-)
Yes, now that I'm back using public Transport - its like I'm
a whole new person! And I'm truly lovin' it!!!
MacDonalds - I'm lovin' it! |
I've got EXTRA time on my hands (both in the mornings
and in the afternoons!). So much so that I'm contemplating
my routine... Actually, since I am not travelling in by car anymore,
I think that my routine has changed already! Eish!
Take for instance: I take an early train - similar to the time
I'd have left home - but get to Cape Town station well before
I normally would have been looking for a parking space.
SO... this morning I decided to treat myself to a
MacDonalds Sausage Egg MacMuffin, with free cofee @ R14-95!

Now that's the life! And I still make it to work with time to spare!
Easy, relaxing, stress-free, no rush! AMEN to that!

Back to public transport
So this past weekend an important decision was made - that I give South African public transport, specifically Metrorail, another try... Thing is: They don't always live out their motto:
"Getting South Africa to work!"
I felt that I need a break - it takes a lot out of you to drive in by car on a daily basis. I did an average of 90kms per day! Now, I will only drive to the closest station (which is 2kms from my home) and relax the rest of the way. I take it that as summer is looming - Metrorail will have less "downtimes," "train delays," "power cable thefts" and that their standard, pre-recorded apology won't be reaching my ears soon... LOL!
I've also undertaken to take an earlier train in the mornings, to try and avoid the rush... For those of you not familiar with the standard... It can get quite hectic finding a spot!

Why do we plan
Why do we plan for things? For what's to come, the unknown? Is it for control? That we know what is going to happen?
Question is: Does it turn out the way you wanted?
I had such a great weekend planned... And it didn't turn out that way - at all! But I can say it worked out for the better... Isn't it nice not being in charge or everything?

Is it Friday yet?
Today I woke up with urgency - an almost spring in my step - knowing deep down - its FRIDAY! I wanted to shout it out loud, knowing its going to be a lovely day... when it hit me... its only tomorrow I hear. Its Thursday today. My heart sank. How can this be? How could I loose a day? Or think I gained a day?
Is it all in the mind?
Can't wait for tomorrow... Its going to be EPIC, right?

Bring-'n-Braai - Rhode's Place
Typical South African style we cannot say no to a braai amongst friends. Even better is when we organise a bring-'n-braai - a kind of potluck - where everyone brings their own meat to be prepared at the said venue.
WIKI: The word braai (plural braais) is Afrikaans for "barbecue" or "grill" and is a social custom in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Zambia. The term originated with the Afrikaans-speaking people, but has since been adopted by South Africans of many ethnic backgrounds. This past weekend, Saturday 18 August 2012, we had a lovely day over at the Rhode's Place, in Eerste River.

Time flies
Time flies! LOL! Sounds weird hey? Does it fly? Some would argue it does... or is it just that we don't take notice about what's happening around us? Hmmm? Before you know it, you missed out on something important - or like in my case - a couple of days since I blogged last.
I should get my head in gear... Numerous things have happened, and it should be noted here... time to update and post some pics...

Just another day
Another day in the life of an ordinary South African.
I think I'm finally starting to "get older" - whatever that means and whatever that entails. Don't get me wrong - I'm still young at heart and full of life - I think I can still contribute a lot to the world, my surroundings, my kids. Its when I see how others perceive me, look at me, that I know that the best years of my life might have passed me by.
But as I'm more of an optimist - I have to ask myself - is this true? I can probably sit here and tell myself - Yes, it is! Or I can get up and tell myself - the best years of my life... I'm living it right now.
So, which is it going to be?
Never accept defeat!

Opinion: Rental Hyundai i20
I thought I'd give my opinion on the rental car I've had the last 2-3 weeks, since my ride went in for repairs at Driving Range Panelbeaters, in Stikland. Yet again I was referred to Tempest Car Hire, in Bellville, who issued a silver Hyundai i20 into my care. As always - I received great service from both the panelbeater and the rental company.
I must say, its quite a step up from my 2006 Tata Indica 1.4 LSi. Weird was the fact that both rides are Silver in colour. My son got quite a kick out of it. The specific one I was offered was a 1.4i manual, upholstered seats, with roughly 24'000kms done already.
The first difference I noted when I got into the car was the seats - the driver seat offered a LOT MORE support than the Tata's church bench styled ones. It could adjust in multiple ways - offering me my ideal driving position. For me, being quite a big guy, it was a very great surprise. Next up I noticed the steering wheel height could be adjusted. A very nice touch, I must say. Then I noticed the buttons per the steering wheel - gadgets are always welcomed here! LOL!
With the seating position out of the way I scouted my surroundings and immediately noticed the electric windows and side mirror options. Also part of the panel was a button to "collapse" the side mirrors - protecting them from harm when parking - Nice!
Then I moved over to the centre console. This housed most features needing verification, such as airflow and temperature settings, the radio, cd player and unique centre display. At first I was looking for the trip features under the dials (rev counter and speedometer), but noticed the centre display shows most of these info along with the selected radio channel (or song per cd) currently playing. Also of interest was the date and outside temperature, quite a nice touch. I also found that I could select the current tank capacity, estimated distance on current tank, current litres/100kms, and such. The sound quality is real good - and offers a place for an auxilliary- or USB plug under the console.
The manual 5-speed gearbox proved to be quite solid - and steering felt quite responsive. The car is quite nippy in traffic and the more you drive it, the more your confidence grows in it. If you have the time to look under the speedometer, the ride would advise you to select the following gear in the sequence! Imagine that! I think its marked as per most economical point to change gear in normal daily driving traffic (i.e. 2nd = 10kms/h, 3rd = 30kms/h, 4th = 50kms/h, 5th = 60kms/h).
Furthermore the car offers automatic central locking when the car reaches 30kms/h and will give a constant warning when especially the two front seats are occupied, and no seatbelts are in use. The bootspace is larger than expected for a hatchback - and will easily allow the family's bags or weekly grocery shopping!
One thing I struggled with on my selected model was the rear window wiper... it just didn't want to activate when needed.
But overall, the ride and build quality on this car is fantastic. But comparing the price difference on my Tata to the i20 - what did you expect?
Tata's back!
On Friday morning I got the call from the Panelbeaters - the Tata Indica has been repaired. It was semi-sweet news, as it meant that I'd have to give up the rental car again once I collected my ride. I struggled a bit getting someone to accompany me to collect the Tata from the panelbeaters - after which it was dropped at home (after inspection and loads of paperwork). Must say: It was looking better than I remembered... LOL!
Next day I arranged to take in the rental - to Tempest Car Hire in Bellville, only to find that their offices close EXACTLY at 12:00 pm on a Saturday. I ran late trying to refill the tank. I decided rather to go drop the ride - and opted for the 24-hour drop-off zone at Cape Town International Airport.
All in all its was a great experience - both the panelbeaters and car hire. I'm surely going to miss that ride. But its also good having our ride home...
Be safe on the roads friends...

Day after Women's Day
Yesterday (09 August 2012) all of South Africa celebrated National Women's Day. Typically South African - we were unsure what exactly we must do, or how to celebrate the day. We finally ended up going for breakfast at the Wimpy, in Zevenwacht Mall, Kuils River.
And boy oh boy: Was it packed! I could not believe how many people actually came out to celebrate Women's Day with a breakfast at the mall! There were lines (queues) at most restaurants. Most of them must have made a killing! Yes, normal South African's DO NOT book in advance! No - we just rock up unannounced and expect great service! LOL!
In the end - the day turned out okay. The family had a great breakfast - and we ended up visiting grandma, who was sick at home. I spent my afternoon attempting to create a banner for my new look Facebook page - but the sizing seems to be an issue.
Hope that all of you had a super day - and have taken an extra day off, thus creating a long weekend (unlike me).
Talk soon!
